Programme Notes
“⾒字飲⽔" is a musical piece that draws inspiration from a popular Hong Kong internet slang. The title translates to “see this and drink water," and the melodic motifs in the composition are derived from intervallic combinations resembling the Cantonese tones of the four words in the slang, with the addition of melismas.
The composition is divided into three short movements: “I. Ambient," “II. Scherzo-Fantasia," and “III. Song of Lament." The motifs introduced in the first movement are further developed and explored in the subsequent movements, creating a cohesive musical narrative that encourages reflection and contemplation.
While the original internet slang is focused on encouraging hydration, it also carries a broader message of self-care and love. The composer infuses the music with this message, encouraging listeners to take good care of themselves and to love themselves in every situation, especially during turbulent times.
